iota

iota is a macOS app with four modes: chat with a model, an assistant that looks things up, a coding agent that edits and tests, and your shell in a real terminal. Local or hosted models, plugins, and all 22 scheduled languages of India. Written in Flow.

Four modes

Chat: talk with a model. No tools, so nothing is read and nothing runs. Assistant: reads files, searches the project and the web, and runs commands to find the answer; it never edits a file and asks before a command changes anything. Vibe code: describe the change, and iota edits the files, runs the build and the tests, and keeps going until they pass, showing every edit as a diff. Shell: what you type runs in your own shell, in a real terminal, and the model sees what you ran the next time you ask it something. Shift-Tab moves between them.

Your shell, with a memory

Each command gets its own pseudo-terminal drawn inside its card, with colour, progress bars, prompts, less and vim. Click a card and type, and the keys go to the program. In any mode, a line that starts with ! runs as a command.

All 22 of India's languages

iota lays text out by its shaped width, so conjuncts and vowel signs stay whole, lines break between words, and Urdu reads right to left inside a row. Replies can be in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Urdu or any of the other scheduled languages.

Models, plugins and editors

Models on your Mac, or hosted ones with your own key, chosen from a picker that shows each one's size and abilities, or routed per prompt by a plugin. Plugins add skills, commands, tools and status to the window and switch on or off from one panel; a package manager pins every version with a SHA-256 hash. The same agent runs in Zed through the Agent Client Protocol, and in the terminal as the iota command.

iota reads free memory, memory pressure, swap, disk and the share of memory the GPU may use before it runs a local model. It sizes the context to what is free, runs layers on the GPU, the CPU or both (Auto, GPU, CPU only, Hybrid), and loads the model in the background as a session starts. Tabs give each project its own session.
